BUBBA’s Waltz is dedicated to all of the “bubbas”
in the world. This recording is mainly original klezmer with a few swing
pieces thrown in for the numerous weddings that we have played over the past
three decades - but isn’t that what this music is about? The words of my grandmother echo in
my ears when she heard I was going to major
in music in college; “OY! HE’S GOING TO BECOME A
KLEZMER?!! We recorded this live so that you
hear the music as it is this time. Live music is never the same twice. Eric
Dolphy and Thelonius Monk knew this. Our recordings are done with this in
mind. Perfection is in the imperfections -
Tradition in the non-traditional. The music is about life in Texas. There are tunes about small towns,
my white shrimpers boots and Captain Charles Ives, Michel the director of
Cap. City Playhouse, Port Aransas my home on the Gulf of Mexico, the wide
expanse of grasslands, the act of giving, my
distant cousin Shlomo, those who laugh at the Three Stooges and dance to the
Cotton Eyed Shmo, and my good friend and great musician Kit Gutherz. This music is dedicated to my
playwright/actress/poet/biologist mother (and bubba), Sylvia Averbach aka Billie Brennan who know how to live and love Life
and was definitely a Brener. Hora for Shlomo is dedicated to my
distant cousin Shlomo Carlebach. All of y’all who consider yourselves
bubbas; This is for you, bubba. May we all live lives as full as
these people. |
